India has undergone a remarkable health transformation in the last 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, guided by the principles of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas.
In 2018, the government launched Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana, the world’s largest health insurance programme, offering free coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family annually. Over 44 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued, and treatments worth more than ₹1.8 lakh crore have been provided to socio-economically deprived families.
In October 2024, the scheme was expanded through Ayushman Bharat Vay Vandana, extending health insurance to all senior citizens above 70 years, ensuring dignified healthcare for the elderly.
To strengthen primary healthcare, 1.86 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been established across India, delivering maternal and child care, immunisation, diagnostics, and free essential medicines at the community level.
The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana has made quality generic medicines available at significantly lower prices, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for millions of families.
Medical education has expanded rapidly: the number of AIIMS has grown from 8 in 2014 to 23, while medical colleges have increased from 387 to 818, addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals nationwide.
The Ministry of AYUSH, established in 2014, has integrated traditional medicine into mainstream healthcare, with 942 AYUSH institutions opened till 2025, promoting holistic wellness.
Digital healthcare has also advanced, with over 47 crore telemedicine consultations delivered through platforms like eSanjeevani, ensuring access even in remote areas.
India’s healthcare reforms have reduced out-of-pocket spending, improved public confidence in government facilities, and strengthened disease-control programmes, moving the nation closer to universal health coverage.
As India enters Amrit Kaal, these landmark reforms reflect a commitment to making healthcare a right, not a privilege, ensuring dignity, care, and hope for every citizen.
