Campus security has come under sharp scrutiny after a shocking shooting incident inside a law college in Punjab, where a law student allegedly opened fire on his female classmate inside a classroom, killing her on the spot, before turning the gun on himself.
The incident took place at Mai Bhago Law College in Usma village of Tarn Taran district on Monday morning, sending shockwaves across the campus and the wider academic community. According to police, the accused, a first-year law student, entered the classroom before lectures began and sat beside the victim, also a student of the same batch.
Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage reportedly show that the accused suddenly pulled out a firearm from his bag and shot the woman at close range. She sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died instantly. Moments later, the accused allegedly shot himself and collapsed inside the classroom.
The injured student was rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar, where his condition is stated to be critical. Police officials said the firearm used in the crime has been recovered from the spot.
The brutal incident triggered panic among students and staff, who rushed out of classrooms as news spread. The college administration immediately suspended classes and informed the police, who cordoned off the area and began a detailed investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest a possible personal or relationship-related angle, though police said the exact motive will be established only after examining call records, messages, and statements of friends and family members. Both students’ mobile phones have been seized for forensic analysis.
The victim’s family has raised serious questions over campus safety, particularly how a student was able to bring a firearm into an educational institution without any security checks. The incident has reignited debate over the lack of surveillance, access control, and preventive mechanisms in many private colleges.
Senior police officials said they are also probing the source of the weapon and whether any negligence on the part of the institution contributed to the lapse in security. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
