Srinagar, August 19: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday took a scenic Shikara rideon the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, offering the senior American diplomat an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Kashmir. Officials said Gor went to Dal Lake after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his residence in Gupkar.
Gor was accompanied by his security personnel and officials from the US Embassy during the Shikara ride. The visit to Dal Lake was among the highlights of his first official trip to Jammu and Kashmir since taking charge as the US Ambassador to India earlier this year.
The US envoy spent time on the picturesque waters of Dal Lake, one of Srinagar’s most prominent tourist attractions. His Shikara ride attracted attention from locals and visitors, with visuals of the ambassador enjoying the iconic Kashmir experience emerging on social media and news platforms.
Earlier in the day, Gor met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and held discussions on strengthening engagement between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States. According to Abdullah, the discussions covered possibilities for greater cooperation in areas including tourism, horticulture and the new and emerging opportunities in the region.
Speaking after the meeting, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and praised the beauty of the region. He also said he was pleased to visit Kashmir for the first time and expressed his appreciation for the changing security environment in the Union Territory.
The ambassador also indicated that the United States would review its travel advisory concerning Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed to improvements in security and suggested that Washington would assess the situation before deciding whether to revise the existing advisory.
Gor’s visit comes at an important time for Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, which has been working to restore international visitor confidence. His public experience of Srinagar’s tourism attractions, including Dal Lake and Pari Mahal, provided a prominent international spotlight on the region’s scenic and cultural appeal. Gor himself shared that he had enjoyed experiencing the beauty of Srinagar, including visits to Pari Mahal and the iconic Dal Lake.
The visit also carried diplomatic significance. Gor’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir drew a strong reaction from Pakistan, which summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a formal protest over his description of the region as an important part of India. Pakistan reiterated its position that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory.
For Jammu and Kashmir, the ambassador’s visit was notable not only for its diplomatic dimension but also for the attention it brought to Srinagar’s tourism potential. The Shikara ride on Dal Lake, a defining symbol of Kashmir tourism, added a cultural and tourism-oriented element to the high-profile visit.
Gor is scheduled to continue his Jammu and Kashmir engagement with a visit to Ladakh following his Srinagar programme. His two-day regional tour is being closely watched for its diplomatic, tourism and strategic significance.
The Shikara ride ultimately became one of the most visible moments of the ambassador’s Srinagar visit, showcasing Dal Lake and Kashmir’s famed landscape to an international audience while underscoring the growing diplomatic attention being given to Jammu and Kashmir.
