The Delhi Police Cyber Cell has busted an inter-state cyber-fraud network allegedly involved in a “digital arrest” scam and arrested four people from Punjab and Rajasthan. The arrests were made in connection with a case in which a retired Indian Army Colonel was allegedly cheated of more than ₹15 lakh.
According to the police, the accused allegedly contacted the retired officer and posed as officials from law enforcement agencies. Using the “digital arrest” method, the suspects allegedly convinced the victim that he was involved in a serious legal case and needed to follow their instructions to avoid arrest.
The fraudsters allegedly kept the victim engaged through phone and online communication and created a sense of fear and urgency. Taking advantage of the situation, they allegedly persuaded him to transfer more than ₹15 lakh into accounts controlled by the fraud network.
Following a complaint, the Cyber Cell began investigating the transactions and digital trails linked to the fraud. The investigation led police to different locations in Punjab and Rajasthan, where four suspects were subsequently arrested.
Police said the investigation is continuing to identify other people who may have been involved in the network. The role of the arrested accused and the flow of the allegedly defrauded money are also being examined.
The case highlights the growing threat posed by digital arrest scams, in which fraudsters impersonate police officers, government officials or other authorities and threaten victims with arrest or legal action. Investigators have repeatedly warned people not to transfer money or share sensitive banking details in response to such threats.
Delhi Police has urged citizens to remain cautious when receiving calls from unknown persons claiming to represent law enforcement agencies. Genuine investigating agencies do not conduct arrests through video calls or demand money from individuals to settle criminal cases.
