Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Monday reiterated that the Central Government is firmly committed to bringing transparency, accountability and efficiency to the management of Waqf properties across India. Chairing a high-level review meeting in New Delhi with senior Ministry officials, State Waqf Board chairpersons, and representatives from the Central Waqf Council, Rijiju said the government’s priority is to safeguard Waqf assets, prevent encroachments and ensure that the income generated from these properties is used for the welfare of the intended beneficiaries.
He highlighted ongoing initiatives such as nationwide digital mapping of Waqf land, creation of a centralised database, strengthening audit mechanisms and introducing modern management practices to reduce irregularities. Rijiju also directed officials to speed up integration of records with the Waqf Management System of India portal to improve public access and transparency.
Calling the reforms a long overdue necessity, he said that the community must have confidence that Waqf resources are being managed honestly and effectively. Participants including senior officers Naseem Ahmad, Mohammad Iqbal, and several Waqf Board members shared concerns about encroachments, slow legal processes and lack of manpower in state boards. Rijiju assured full support from the Ministry and urged all stakeholders to work collectively to strengthen Waqf governance, protect heritage properties and ensure that funds are utilised for education, health and community development programmes.
