The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed user evaluation trials of the Akash-NG missile system, marking a major step towards its induction into the Indian Air Force. Conducted at a test facility with the participation of IAF personnel, the trials validated the system’s ability to intercept multiple aerial targets under diverse operational conditions.
The Akash-NG, or Next Generation Akash, is designed to provide a robust air defence shield against a wide spectrum of aerial threats including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. The missile is equipped with an indigenous Radio Frequency seeker and powered by a solid rocket motor, enabling high manoeuvrability and precision engagement across ranges and altitudes.
The system comprises advanced components such as a Multi-Function Radar, Command and Control Unit, and Missile Launch Vehicle, all developed indigenously in collaboration with Indian industry partners. During the evaluation, the missile successfully demonstrated its capability to neutralize targets in complex scenarios, including low-altitude near-boundary threats and long-range high-altitude engagements.
Senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Air Force witnessed the trials, which confirmed the reliability and versatility of the Akash-NG system. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the IAF, and industry partners for the achievement, describing it as a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The successful completion of user trials positions the Akash-NG for induction into service, strengthening India’s layered air defence capabilities. Once deployed, the system will enhance operational flexibility and provide a significant boost to national security by reducing dependence on foreign imports and ensuring readiness for diverse battlefield conditions.
