Guwahati, November 10, 2025 — The Assam Cabinet has approved the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, marking a significant legislative step toward curbing the practice of polygamy in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the bill will be formally tabled in the Assam Legislative Assembly on November 25.
The proposed legislation seeks to criminalize polygamy, with provisions for up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for those convicted. In cases where individuals conceal a previous marriage, the punishment may extend to ten years. Additionally, abettors—including religious officiants or guardians—could face up to two years of imprisonment for facilitating such unions.
Recognizing the social and economic impact on affected women, the Assam government has committed to establishing a dedicated compensation fund. This initiative aims to support victims of polygamy, ensuring they have access to financial assistance and resources to rebuild their lives independently.
However, the bill includes specific exemptions for Scheduled Tribe communities and areas governed under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, such as the Bodoland Territorial Region, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao districts. These regions will not be immediately subject to the provisions of the new law, reflecting the state’s sensitivity to constitutional protections and cultural autonomy.
