Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has alleged that several of her party workers were placed under house arrest to prevent them from staging protests against alleged ‘backdoor appointments’ in government departments.
Mehbooba claimed that the administration’s move was aimed at silencing dissent and curbing democratic rights, accusing authorities of misusing power to shield irregular recruitment practices.
She stated that the protests were intended to highlight unfair appointments and demand transparency in government hiring, but the preventive detentions were carried out to foil the demonstrations.
The PDP leader further asserted that such actions reflect the shrinking democratic space in Jammu and Kashmir, where even peaceful protests are being suppressed.
Her remarks have sparked political debate, with opposition parties criticizing the government’s approach while officials have yet to issue a formal response to the allegations.
