BJP has sharply criticised Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after he alleged that the party attempted to poach National Conference (NC) MLAs with offers of ₹20–30 crore, ministerial berths, and promises of statehood. The BJP dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated, demanding that Abdullah either provide evidence or issue a public apology.
Omar Abdullah made the allegations during a memorial event in Srinagar, accusing the BJP of trying to destabilise the NC-led government through money power and inducements. He asserted that NC legislators would not compromise their integrity, warning that patience should not be mistaken for weakness.
Responding to the charges, BJP leaders including national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi and J&K MLA R.S. Pathania challenged Abdullah to substantiate his claims. They warned that failure to do so could invite defamation proceedings, while accusing him of attempting to divert attention from governance failures.
The controversy comes at a time when the NC is preparing for a protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on July 20, 2026, coinciding with the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The demonstration will press for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a promise repeatedly made by the Centre but yet to be fulfilled.
The exchange highlights rising political tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, with the BJP seeking to defend its image while the NC positions itself as the defender of Kashmiri rights and constitutional entitlements.
