The Government has strongly refuted claims suggesting that the Income Tax Department is tracking personal digital activity of citizens. Officials clarified that no such monitoring mechanism exists and described the reports as misleading and factually incorrect.
In a statement, the Government emphasised that the Income Tax Department functions strictly within the framework of law and its operations are limited to matters concerning taxation and compliance. Authorities reiterated that individual privacy remains protected under existing legal provisions.
The clarification comes in response to concerns raised on social media and certain reports alleging surveillance of digital behaviour. The Government stressed that such claims are unfounded and may create unnecessary apprehension among the public.
Officials further noted that India’s data protection and privacy laws ensure that personal digital activity cannot be monitored arbitrarily. They added that the Department’s focus continues to be on improving taxpayer services, enhancing transparency, and strengthening compliance systems.
The Government urged citizens not to be misled by speculative reports and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding privacy while maintaining robust mechanisms for tax administration.
