New Delhi, October 14: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said trade negotiations between India and the United States are progressing in the right direction, with both sides working to settle the remaining details of an agreement.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi on Tuesday, Jaishankar said the negotiations were at an advanced stage. India’s Commerce and Industry Minister and the United States Trade Representative were continuing discussions to work out the deal, he added.
Describing the talks as moving towards a “landing point”, the minister expressed optimism about their progress. His remarks indicated that negotiations were continuing, although a final agreement had yet to be concluded. Differences over tariffs and market access remain part of the discussions.
Jaishankar also spoke about the broader relationship between New Delhi and Washington. He said India shares a strong strategic partnership with the United States, while making clear that this partnership does not amount to an alliance.
He noted that Washington had changed the way it engages with other countries, prompting governments around the world to reassess their relationships with the United States. His comments placed the ongoing trade negotiations within that wider shift in international relations.
