Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, during his official visit to Oslo on May 18, 2026. The award was presented by King Harald V of Norway in recognition of Modi’s outstanding service to strengthening bilateral ties and his global leadership.
This marks Modi’s 32nd international award, coming just a day after he received Sweden’s Royal Order of the Polar Star. The honour underscores India’s rising global stature and the Prime Minister’s role in advancing peace, cooperation, and development across nations.
Union Ministers across portfolios extended their congratulations. Home Minister Amit Shah said the award expands Modi’s leadership “from the south of the globe to its north,” symbolizing India’s growing influence. Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda described it as a reflection of India’s increasing respect worldwide and the deep friendship with Norway. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the recognition as a testament to India’s economic and diplomatic progress. Power Minister Manohar Lal linked the honour to Modi’s commitment to the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning the world is one family. Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju praised Modi’s global leadership and India’s rising credibility.
During his Oslo visit, Modi attended the India–Nordic Summit and held bilateral talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, focusing on trade, clean energy, Arctic cooperation, and investments from Norway’s sovereign wealth fund. Modi dedicated the honour to the people of India, calling it a tribute to the enduring friendship between India and Norway.
The recognition is seen as a milestone in India’s diplomatic journey, reinforcing its role as a key global partner in areas ranging from sustainable development to strategic cooperation.
