JAMMU: Union Minister for Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, has announced that the G2 stage of lithium exploration in Jammu and Kashmir will be completed by January 2026. The exploration is being carried out by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) following the discovery of significant lithium reserves in the Reasi district earlier this year.
Reddy stated that the government is committed to fast-tracking the exploration process to ensure that India can harness its domestic lithium resources, which are critical for the production of batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. He emphasised that the completion of the G2 stage will provide a clearer estimate of the reserves and pave the way for commercial exploitation.
The Minister highlighted that the discovery of lithium in J&K is a strategic development for India’s energy transition goals, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening the country’s position in the global clean energy supply chain. He added that the Centre is working closely with the Union Territory administration to facilitate infrastructure and investment support for the mining sector.
The announcement underscores the government’s focus on sustainable resource management and industrial growth, with lithium exploration expected to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s renewable energy and electric mobility initiatives.
