Senior diplomat Vikram K. Doraiswami has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to China, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on March 19, 2026. Doraiswami is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
A 1992-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Doraiswami has held several key diplomatic assignments. He previously served as India’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, South Korea, and Uzbekistan, and began his career with an early posting in Hong Kong in 1994.
His appointment comes at a sensitive time in India-China relations, with ongoing discussions on border issues, trade, and regional stability. Doraiswami is expected to bring his extensive diplomatic experience to strengthen dialogue between New Delhi and Beijing.
He will succeed Pradeep Kumar Rawat, who has been serving as India’s Ambassador to China. The transition is seen as part of India’s broader effort to recalibrate its diplomatic engagement with Beijing.
Observers note that Doraiswami’s appointment reflects India’s emphasis on seasoned diplomats to manage complex foreign policy challenges, particularly in relations with major powers like China.
