PUDUCHERRY, Apr 7: Student volunteers will assist elderly and differently abled voters during the upcoming assembly elections in Puducherry, ensuring smoother access to polling stations and greater inclusivity in the democratic process.
According to election officials, hundreds of college and university students have registered to serve as volunteers. They will help senior citizens and persons with disabilities reach polling booths, provide wheelchairs where required, and guide them through the voting process.
The initiative is part of the Election Commission’s drive to make elections more accessible and voter-friendly. Special arrangements, including ramps, priority queues, and transport facilities, have also been put in place across polling stations in the Union Territory.
Officials emphasized that the involvement of student volunteers not only strengthens civic participation but also fosters awareness among youth about the importance of inclusive elections. Training sessions have been conducted to prepare volunteers for assisting voters respectfully and effectively.
The Election Commission has urged all eligible voters to verify their details in the electoral roll and make use of the facilities provided to ensure maximum participation in the polls.
