Nepal’s former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was arrested in Bhaktapur on March 28, 2026, in connection with last year’s crackdown on Gen Z-led anti-corruption protests.
Authorities said Oli, along with former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, was detained following the recommendations of a government-appointed probe commission.
The commission had investigated the September 2025 protests, where dozens of young demonstrators were killed during police action, and held top leaders accountable for negligence.
Oli was taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for a medical check after his arrest, while his party CPN-UML announced nationwide protests against the move.
The arrests came a day after Balendra Shah was sworn in as Nepal’s new Prime Minister, signaling a major political shift and an attempt to enforce accountability for past human rights violations.
