New Delhi, 8 December 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday initiated a major debate in the Lok Sabha to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, calling for a deeper understanding of the national song’s historical significance and its role in India’s freedom movement.
Opening the discussion, the Prime Minister highlighted the cultural and patriotic foundations of Vande Mataram, noting that the song had inspired generations of freedom fighters and shaped the national consciousness during the struggle against colonial rule.
He also pointed to what he described as the political misuse of Vande Mataram over the decades, saying that attempts to create divisions around the national song had undermined its unifying spirit. The Prime Minister urged members of the House to view the song through the lens of history rather than partisan politics.
Several members participated in the debate, reflecting on the literary, cultural and political journey of Vande Mataram since its composition in the 19th century. The discussion also touched upon its relevance in contemporary India and the need to preserve its legacy for future generations.
The debate was part of a series of commemorative events planned in Parliament to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram.
